NATIONAL RECIPROCITY FOR CONCEAL CARRY

Travelling to other states with your concealed carry permit?

As of January 1, 2025 there is not any concealed carry permit that allows the permit holder to cross all state lines while armed.

However, let's hope for a change when President Trump addresses this long awaited issue soon.

What does reciprocity mean?

In a nutshell, it means that if two states agree upon honoring each other's permit, they now have reciprocity for the permit holder.

Utah is the most popular permit to obtain and is very inexpensive for a 5-year permit compared to the 2-year burdensome California permit.

Many CA permit holders obtain the Utah permit through a certified instructor while taking their CA class. Utah offers a non-resident 5-year permit (currently allows carrying with reciprocity for 36 states). It is $62.00 for the permit, and roughly $100-$150 for the instructor certification upon completion of a four hour training class. Renewals cost $25 online every 5 years with no training and qualifications required.

Depending on whether national reciprocity comes to fruition soon, and the parameters involved, I would expect most people to get the Utah permit and get rid of their CA permit. Utah and the reciprocating states allow any gun legally in your possession and does not require "qualifying" with each gun. In essence, as of today, if you have a Utah permit, I could meet you in Nevada with ten of my guns, and you can carry all ten guns.
